Top 10 autumn walks with your dog

October welcomes the start of one of the most colourful seasons of the year. These beautiful autumnal displays aren’t here for long, so get out and about to enjoy the changes before the branches become bare as winter approaches.

Here are our top 10 favourite autumn walks to be enjoyed with your pooch.

Blackwater Arboretum, New Forest

The Blackwater Tall Trees Trail is a beautiful trail located just off the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive where you’ll see Douglas Fir and mighty redwoods. There are plenty of leaves to collect on the way, wooden ornaments to climb, and you might even come across some gazing roe deer in the beech woodland.

Grizedale Forest, Lake District

In the heart of the Lake District, Grizedale Forest has 8 waymarked walking trails featuring 40 sculptures ready to be discovered by you and your dog. You might even spot Lake Windermere or Coniston Water, depending on what trail you follow. There’s also a Shaun the Sheep family adventure game to entertain the kids along the way.

Exmoor National Park, Devon

You’re spoilt for choice with Exmoor National Park’s paths and trails when it comes to the perfect autumnal backdrop. From exploring Tarr Steps, a bridge made entirely from slabs and boulders to enjoying the sea air at Porlock Bay, you and your pooch are bound for a day of adventures where you go.

Holkham Beach, Norfolk

Holkham Beach welcomes dogs and horses – you have miles of sand to walk on and once you’re bored of emptying your shoes from the pesky stuff, why not head towards the dunes and pine forest for a change of scenery?

Uath Lochans, Cairngorms

Enjoy a walk at the Uath Lochans trail where you might be accompanied by some dragonflies, while you make your way down your chosen trail around the four small lochs.

Steall Falls, Scottish Highlands

Even on your walk through Glen Nevis on the way to Steall Falls, you’ll be surrounded by autumnal colours, a winding river and plenty of waterfalls. You’ll be able to tell when you’re close to Steal Falls as you’ll hear it from a good distance away.

The Hermitage, Dunkeld

The Hermitage is another walk where you’ll be able to enjoy the giant Douglas Firs and various walks will take you through the woodlands towards the tumbling Black Linn Falls below.

Llyn Gwynant, Snowdonia

Llyn Gwynant lies on the River Glaslyn, in the Nant Gwynant valley – whether you take a walk around the lake or follow one of the paths leading from it, you’ll be able to enjoy the orange of the oak woodlands against the green of fields and rusty bracken.

Rhossili headland, Swansea

From the Rhossili headland, you’ll enjoy some stunning views across Rhossili bay and even Worm’s Head causeway, which are unbeatable once the sun starts setting. The beautiful beach below is also dog-friendly all year round so you can always return in the summer months to enjoy some more sandy adventures.

Niwbwrch Forest, Anglesey

Niwbwrch Forest includes many forest trails to be enjoyed with your pooch, and you might be lucky enough to spot one of Anglesey’s famous red squirrels. Dogs can explore Llanddwyn Island in autumn, too, so if you want some sand between your toes (or in your shoes) head out of the forest and along the beach.

Even if you don’t live near these terrific walks, you can enjoy an autumn adventure in your local woodland or park instead. Share your favourite autumn walks on our Facebook or Twitter page.
